Africa Learning Exchange on Rights and Conservation: Summary Report

March 2024
Tenure Facility, International Land Coalition Africa, and Community Land Action Now!

In early October 2023, Tenure Facility, International Land Coalition and Community Land Action Now! Jointly organised an Africa-wide learning exchange on rights and conservation in Kenya. This five-day event aimed to empower Indigenous Peoples and local communities in securing their land and territorial rights. Delegates took part from Burkina Faso, Mali, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Madagascar, Gabon, Cameroon, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, and discussed effective strategies, approaches, and solutions for advancing these rights within the context of conservation. The summary report documents some of the community visits, dialogues, and experience sharing that took place. The summary report also sheds light on the efforts of pilot initiatives in Kenya, where indigenous and local community rights are enshrined in the legal framework, to involve local communities in conservation practices and management. The exchange enabled comparison of cases, to identify lessons learned for avoiding ongoing dispossessions of communities across the Africa region in the name of conservation.
