Gender and equity implications of large land-based investments in Laos

2011
FAO, Laos

Mokoro Principal Consultant, Elizabeth Daley, was commissioned to lead fieldwork-based research in Laos by an FAO team. The objective of the research was to develop policy recommendations on gender and social equity aspects of large land-based investments in the agricultural sector for labour issues, access to land and income generation opportunities.

The research focused on fieldwork with companies engaging in different models of contract farming and plantation agriculture in production of tobacco, jatropha, bananas, rice, cassava, and agro-forestry.

The team also reviewed broader governance and contextual issues around large land-based investments in Laos, and the country’s land and natural resources sector in general.
